Electrical Final Inspection Guide
Your inspector needs to see the completed electrical installation, required GFCI protection, panel labeling and representative testing showing that the system is operating properly.
Show Us the Finished Electrical System.
Start with a walkthrough, then show the panel, required protected receptacles and representative testing so the inspector can see that the completed installation is operating.
Focus on required GFCI-protected locations and test a representative sample of other receptacles. The goal is to show proper operation and a consistent installation pattern. Your inspector may request additional testing if needed.
Show us the completed electrical areas.
Start with a slow walkthrough of the areas included in the final inspection.
Make sure we can see:
- Finished rooms and work areas
- Receptacles and switches
- Lighting fixtures
- Electrical panel or service equipment
- Major electrical equipment
- Exterior electrical work, where applicable
Show us the electrical panel.
Show the completed panel and make sure the circuit directory is properly and legibly labeled.
Make sure we can see:
- The complete panel
- Panel cover installed
- Readable circuit directory
- Breaker identification
- Required equipment labeling
Take a close-up photo where the circuit labels can actually be read.
Show us the required GFCI locations.
Show GFCI-protected receptacles in the locations required for your project.
This may include:
- Kitchens
- Bathrooms
- Garages
- Exterior locations
- Laundry or utility areas
- Other required locations shown by the project or applicable requirements
Give enough surrounding context so the inspector can tell where the receptacle is located.
Test the GFCI receptacles.
Use a plug-in receptacle tester at representative required GFCI locations.
For the video:
- Show the receptacle location first
- Insert the receptacle tester
- Show the tester indication clearly
- Demonstrate the GFCI test function where applicable
- Show that the protected device responds correctly
- Reset the device when testing is complete
Test representative GFCI locations in different areas of the project rather than showing only one receptacle.
Test a few other receptacles.
Use the receptacle tester at a representative sample of standard receptacles so the inspector can see a consistent pattern of operation.
Show:
- A few receptacles in different rooms or areas
- The tester inserted into the receptacle
- The tester indication clearly visible
You do not need to record every receptacle unless the inspector specifically requests additional testing.
Show us the lights and switches working.
Demonstrate representative lighting and switch operation throughout the project.
Make sure we can see:
- Switch operation
- Lighting fixtures operating
- Exterior lighting, where applicable
- Special lighting controls, where applicable
Show us alarms and required electrical devices.
Show installed safety devices and other required electrical equipment included in the project.
This may include:
- Smoke alarms
- Carbon monoxide alarms, where applicable
- Exterior receptacles and covers
- Equipment disconnects
- Special electrical equipment
- Other required finished electrical devices
Show us anything different or unusual.
If an electrical condition is different from the typical installation, make sure your inspector can see it clearly.
- Special equipment
- Different receptacle types
- Unusual electrical controls
- Exterior equipment
- Field changes
- Anything else your inspector should see
Before You Submit
Take 30 seconds and make sure your inspector can see that the electrical installation is complete, labeled and operating.
- Did you show the completed electrical areas?
- Is the electrical panel properly and legibly labeled?
- Did you show required GFCI locations?
- Did you use a receptacle tester at representative GFCI outlets?
- Did you test a few representative standard receptacles?
- Did you show representative lights and switches operating?
- Did you show required smoke or CO alarms, where applicable?
- Did you show exterior electrical devices and special equipment, where applicable?
