Windows & Doors Inspection Guide

Your inspector needs to identify each window and exterior door, verify how it is installed and anchored, and see the flashing and weatherproofing before those details are covered.

8 simple things we need
Keep It Simple

Show Us the Product, Fasteners and Flashing.

Start with a wide photo of each opening so we know where it is. Then move closer to show the product information, anchors, flashing and installation details.

Not every window or door installs the same way.

Different products, opening sizes, substrates and systems can have different fastening and installation requirements. Follow the approved plans and the applicable manufacturer or approved product installation details for the specific window or door at each opening.

Proper sill protection is important.

Window openings should have the required sill flashing, sill tape or approved sill-protection system before those conditions are concealed. Make sure the inspector can clearly see the sill and both lower corners.

If we need to verify fastener spacing or another dimension, show us the tape measure.

Include clear photos with a measuring tape next to the fasteners, anchors, bearing area or other dimension being verified.

Show us every window and exterior door.

Start with a wide view of each opening so the inspector can identify where the product is installed.

Make sure we can see:

  • The complete window or door
  • The surrounding wall
  • The location of the opening
  • Different window or door types
  • Large or special openings

Show the full opening first. Then take the close-up installation photos.

2
Photo / Document

Show us the product identification.

Take clear photos of available labels, markings or product information so the inspector can identify what was installed.

Make sure we can read, where available:

  • Manufacturer
  • Model or series
  • Product label or identification
  • Product approval information
  • Other identifying markings

Include the applicable approved product or installation documentation with the inspection where required.

3
Photo / Video

Show us the sill flashing or sill protection.

For window openings, show the sill flashing, sill tape or other approved sill-protection system before it gets covered.

Make sure we can see:

  • The entire sill
  • Proper sill tape or approved sill protection
  • Both lower corners
  • Flashing extending up the jambs where required
  • Seams and transitions
  • How the sill protection ties into the wall weather barrier system

Take one wider photo of the complete opening, then clear close-ups of the sill and both lower corners.

If an overlap or flashing dimension needs to be verified, include a measuring-tape photo.

Photo / Measurement

Show us how the frame is fastened.

Show the fasteners or anchors attaching the window or door frame to the structure.

Follow the applicable manufacturer or approved product installation requirements for fastener type, location and spacing.

Make sure we can see:

  • Fasteners along the jambs
  • Fasteners at the head
  • Required sill fastening, where applicable
  • Fastener or anchor type
  • Representative fastening locations around the frame

Where fastener spacing needs to be verified, place a measuring tape next to the fasteners and take a clear photo.

If the approved installation detail requires fasteners in every designated fastening hole or location, make sure each required location has the specified fastener.

5
Photo / Video

Show us what the frame is attached to.

Show enough surrounding construction for the inspector to identify the substrate or support receiving the fasteners.

This may include:

  • Wood framing
  • Concrete
  • Masonry
  • Bucks
  • Other approved attachment substrates

If bucks are used, make sure the inspector can see the buck and its relationship to the opening and window or door frame.

6
Photo / Video

Show us the flashing around the opening.

Show how the window or door installation ties into the surrounding weather barrier system.

Make sure we can see:

  • Sill condition
  • Jamb flashing or tape
  • Head flashing or tape
  • Corners and transitions
  • Seams and overlaps
  • Integration with housewrap, WRB or integrated sheathing system

Use the flashing tape or sealing materials required by the applicable approved system. If an overlap needs to be verified, include a measuring-tape photo.

7
Photo / Measurement

Show us mullions and special assemblies.

If multiple windows or doors are joined together, or the opening uses a mullion or other special assembly, show those connections separately.

Make sure we can see:

  • Mullions
  • Mullion-to-frame connections
  • Mullion anchorage
  • Multiple-unit assemblies
  • Special anchors or structural connections
  • Any special installation details shown in the approved documents

If anchor or fastener spacing needs to be verified, include a measuring-tape photo.

8
Photo / Video

Show us anything different or unusual.

If one window, door or opening is different from the rest, make sure your inspector can see it clearly.

  • Different product types
  • Different substrates
  • Large or unusual openings
  • Different fastening patterns
  • Repairs or field modifications
  • Special flashing conditions
  • Anything else your inspector should see

Before You Submit

Take 30 seconds and make sure your inspector can identify each window or door and clearly see how it was installed.

  • Did you show the complete window or door before taking close-ups?
  • Can we identify the manufacturer or product where labels are available?
  • Did you show the sill flashing or sill protection at the windows?
  • Can we see both lower window corners clearly?
  • Did you show the anchors or fasteners around the frame?
  • Did you follow the applicable approved manufacturer or product installation detail?
  • Where spacing needs to be verified, did you include measuring-tape photos?
  • Can we see what substrate the frame is attached to?
  • Did you show the flashing around the jambs, head and sill?
  • Did you show mullions or special assemblies separately?
  • Are the important installation details still exposed and visible?
You're Ready

That's It.

Submit your photos, videos, measurement photos and applicable product documentation through Permit Rockstar. Your inspector will compare the installation with the approved plans and applicable manufacturer or product installation requirements.

BACK TO INSPECTION GUIDES
This guide covers typical evidence needed for a windows and doors inspection. Product, fastening, flashing and installation requirements vary by manufacturer, product approval, substrate, opening and project. Your inspector may request additional photos, videos, measurements or documentation based on the approved plans and applicable installation requirements.
